Notes:

Mouldy maize (6-12ug/kg) was implicated for an outbreak of intoxication with aflatoxin in India in 200 villages in 1974. 397 patients were intoxicated and 106 deaths were reported. Symptoms included fever, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, hepatomegaly, ascites and ankle oedema. No infants were affected.

  • Pigmentation of Aspergillus versicolor colonies ranged from pale green to greenish-beige, pink-green, dark green and brown. Reverse is usually reddish. The growth rate is usually slow. Cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol.
