Vilnius International Summit on Communicable Diseases

Conference abbreviation: VISCD

Date uploaded: 8 March 2016

Conference Year: 2016

Location:

Vilnius – Lithuania

Further information:

As the 21st century proceeds, and the world becomes ever more inter-connected, the mutual interest of all countries in fighting infectious diseases has never been more apparent.. Socioeconomic, environmental and behavioural factors, as well as international travel and migration, population movements and changing patterns of human behaviour foster and increase the spread of communicable diseases. Experiences show that where disease control and research efforts are scaled back, “old” infectious diseases rapidly re-emerge and microbes adapt to changing circumstances and have ability to create outbreaks of “new” diseases. The objective of the Vilnius Communicable diseases week is to present and discuss evidence-based policies, guidance, approaches and best practice examples of tackling communicable diseases  from across the region.

Abstract Submission Deadline: June 1, 2016

Accelerating antimicrobial drug development

Date uploaded: 26 February 2016

Conference Year: 2016

Location:

Vienna, Austria

Further information:

This conference is coorganized with ASM.

Background: Antimicrobial drug resistance is an urgent problem.  There are relatively few agents in developmental pipelines.  Traditional pathways for drug development are expensive and slow.  Both the EMA and FDA have recognised some of these obstacles for drug development.  New regulation now enables accelerated drug development, with adaptive licensing until larger definitive phase III studies are completed.  Such an approach enables access to drugs for patients with unmet medical needs.

Challenges: There is uncertainty regarding what constitutes reasonable pathways for accelerated drug development.  There is a reliance on very robust preclinical studies, innovative clinical trial design, strong academic-industrial partnerships, and a requirement for early engagement with regulatory bodies.
