Filamentous Fungi Infecting Burns

Submitted by GAtherton on 20 February 2015

Patients with severe burns seemed to be getting infected by filamentous fungi more frequently but good data was needed to support this impression at a burns centre in France.

Their work showed 1.7% of all burns patients acquired a fungal infection, the most severe burns being most prone to infection.

Of the fungi that were found to infect burns Aspergillus was the most common, present in 20/29 (69%) of cases, and even though these numbers are quite small compared with the total number of burns patents reviewed they were associated with high mortality with 30% dying.
