Antibiotic R&D and NIH Funding Set for a Vote with House Cures Bill
Take 3 Minutes to Urge Your Representative to Vote “Yes”

A few weeks ago, the House committee that oversees health policy voted 51-0 to approve legislation to speed medical innovation. The 21st Century Cures Act, H.R. 6, includes provisions that IDSA supports, such as:

  • a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) Innovation Fund to provide an additional mandatory $2 billion per year for 5 years;
  • an increase in the NIH loan repayment maximum from $35,000 to $50,000; and
  • a new Limited Population Antibacterial Drug (LPAD) pathway that will allow antibiotics and antifungals that treat serious or life-threatening infections for which there is an unmet medical need to be studied in smaller clinical trials and approved for a limited population of patients for whom the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks.

Despite unanimous support for the legislation in committee, IDSA needs your help to win passage in the full House. A strong House vote in favor of the bill is also important for putting pressure on the Senate to advance these priorities as soon as possible. If you have not already done so, please take three minutes to ask your representative to vote in favor of the 21st Century Cures bill.
