Despite improvements made in early diagnosis and effective treatment, IPA remains a devastating opportunistic infection. We have reviewed the clinical charts of 41 consecutive patients diagnosed of probable or definite IPA (pre- mortem classification: proven = 11 pts, probable = 22 pts, possible = 8 pts [all 8 with positive autopsy]) from 1995 to 2000, to study survival and prognostic factors. All but 2 pts received previous treatment (conventional chemotherapy [CHT1 = 24; allogeneic stem cell transplantation [SCT] = 12; autologous SCT = 3). 10 allogeneic SCT patients had been receiving corticosteroids for GVHD.
