Abstract:
Fungal nomenclature is often difficult to understand. New classification will change commonly used names and there has been confusion about the naming of the different stages of a fungus. However for applied mycology and in particular for medical mycology the correct name is essential for the diagnosis of the disease and further treatment. On 30 July 2011, the long-established practice of allowing separate names to be used for different morphs of the same fungus, dual nomenclature, was ended at the Botanical congress in Melbourne. A new International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants was introduced following the concept of One Fungus One Name. Several working groups are now discussing the choice of the name of the fungus with two or more stages. In Aspergillus and Penicillium this has been done by the IUMS International Commission of Penicillium and Aspergillus (ICPA) and the results of these decisions will be presented. Following the recent phylogenetic studies on Penicillium and related genera this genus is now clearly defined. Howver, the majority of species of Penicillium subgenus Biverticillium were transferred to Talaromyces. Totally 43 taxa were combined in Talaromyces including Talaromyces (Penicillium) marneffei. For Aspergillus several options were considered and these will be shortly discussed. The decision by ICPA was to maintain Aspergillus for all species including those with a teleomorph. For example the name of Aspergillus fumigatus remains Aspergillus fumigatus and not Neosartorya fumigata. All information can be find on www.aspergilluspenicillium.org. The impact of using the single name nomenclature will be discussed.
