Abstract:
The study was conducted with a purpose to report clinical and microbiological profile of patients with ocular candidiasis
Microbiological experimental data combined with retrospective clinical study. Patients with ocular candidiasis were identified
from microbiology records. Significant isolates of Candida species were identified by Vitek 2 compact system. Using CLSI
guidelines minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antifungal agents such as amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole,
fluconazole and caspofungin was determined by E test and of natamycin by microbroth dilution assay. Data on treatment and
outcome were collected from medical records. A total of 36 isolates of Candida were obtained from patients with keratitis
(n=26), endophthalmitis (n=9) and orbital cellulitis («=1). The most common species isolated was Candida albicans (n=10)
from keratitis, (w=3) endophthalmitis, (n=l) orbital cellulitis. All isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B. MIC of
caspofungin was in the susceptible range of 25 (96.1%) comeal isolates while 11 out of 26 (42.3%) comeal isolates were
sensitive to fluconazole. Resistance to voriconazole was seen in two comeal isolates. None of the isolates were susceptible to
itraconazole and all keratitis isolates were susceptible to natamycin. Of the 11 keratitis patients who responded to medical
therapy, eight were treated with natamycin alone. All 9 isolates from endophthalmitis patients were susceptible to amphotericin
B, voriconazole and natamycin. Six out of eight patients with endophthalmitis were given intra vitreal amphotericin B injection
with variable outcome. Ocular candidiasis needs early and specific treatment for optimal results. Candida spp. continue to be
susceptible to most commonly available antifungals including amphotericin B, voriconazole and natamycin.
