Virchow, in 1856, found aspergillosis infection in patients dying of other diseases. Bussler, in 1887, reported a case of a woman, who for 11 years coughed up dark bodies the size of a pea, which consisted almost entirely of the mycelia and spores of the aspergillus. It has been reported as an occupational disease in people handling grains.
