Abstract:
This paper delineates the etiologic significance of Aspergillus niger in a 35 year old woman who had no underlying disease. The diagnosis was confirmed by repeated demonstration of branched septate hyphae morphologically compatible with Aspergillus in two affected finger nails by potassium hydroxide technique and isolation of A.niger in pure and luxuriant growth from the affected nail clippings on Sabouraud’s dextrose agar at 37 degree Celsius. All the four isolates of A.niger showed susceptibility to amphotericin – B, nystatin, clotrimazole and gentian violet. The patient responded to topical application of 1 percent clotrimazole. The routine application of 20 percent KOH for the detection fungal elements in clinical samples will help in the rapid diagnosis of mycotic infection to initiate antifungal chemotherapy for the better management of disease .
