Abstract:
Nosocomial outbreaks of invasive aspergillosis have become a well recognised complication of construction, demolition or renovation activities in or near hospital wards accommodating immunocompromised patients. Nosocomial aspergillosis is a cause of severe illness and mortality in these patients. The purpose of this document is to act as guidance for healthcare staff to ensure that construction/renovation activities in hospital providing for at risk patients are undertaken in a safe and appropriate manner to reduce the risk of infection in these patients. The document outlines the risk factors contributing to nosocomial invasive aspergillosis and identifies the at-risk patients. Recommendations are made as to the measures that can be undertaken to reduce these health risks. Where construction/renovation projects are planned in hospitals providing for at-risk patients, a multi disciplinary team comprising of hospital administrators, technical services staff, designers, infection control staff and relevant clinicians should be established to develop and monitor the implementation of risk management and infection control policies. Clear lines of communication among all personnel involved must be established at the planning phase. The protection of vulnerable patients will depend on the acceptance and effectiveness of implementing infection control measures which will require a high level of commitment, understanding and co-operation from all personnel involved in the construction/renovation project.
