Abstract:
ABSTRACT: A study on 3075 dogs of different breeds, age and sex was conducted during the period from November 1992 to April 1993 to determine the prevalence, haematological, biochemical, immunological and pathological alterations in mycotic dermatitis. The frequency of occurrence of mycotic dermatitis was maximum in January and minimum in March. Dogs of less than 1 year of age and male dogs were more susceptible. The lesions were seen more on the back, face and abdomen. Dermatophytes, including Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophyte and non-dermatophytes mainly Alternaria spp. and Aspergillus flavus were isolated. Haematological alterations were ; leucocytosis with lymphocytosis, neutropenia and eosinophilia. Increased levels of circulating immune complexes and total serum immunoglobulins were also detected. Histopathologically, mycotic dermatitis was characterized by hyperplasia, hyperkeratinization and hydropic degeneration of epidermis with chronic changes in the dermis. Fungal hyphae/elements were demonstrated by special stains.
