Aspergillus blog
We have launched our blog at http://www.aspergillusblog.blogspot.com/ as another route through which people can access information from the Aspergillus website. We plan to use this to provide latest information, news, current events, announcements and links to useful information in a more informal way than we do on the website and will aim to present information to support all or our target audiences, professional and layperson.
Latest News and Articles
There have been 23 additions to the articles section. We have picked out a few of the highlights here:
Well-Characterized Monoclonal Antibodies Against Cell Wall Antigen of Aspergillus
Species Improve Immunoassay Specificity and Sensitivity
Detection of invasive aspergillus based on galactomannan (GM) are weakened by the tendency of the antibody to detect several fungal species,
This new monoclonal antibody is claimed to have similar sensitivity to GM but superior specificity as it had minimal cross reactivity with other fungal species.
Treatment of Aspergillosis: Clinical Practice
Guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Society
of America
This document reviews guidelines
for management of the 3 major forms of aspergillosis:
invasive aspergillosis, chronic (and saprophytic)
forms of aspergillosis, and allergic forms of aspergillosis.
Given the public health importance of invasive aspergillosis,
emphasis is placed on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the different forms of invasive aspergillosis,
including invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, sinus aspergillosis, disseminated aspergillosis, and several
types of single-organ invasive aspergillosis.
Scientists Find Way to Limit Deadly Toxin in Maize
Researchers in Africa find that indigenous strains of aspergillus that do not produce aflatoxins might be able to be used to control the amount of aflatoxin found in crops (a major problem for maize crops). Non-toxic strains outgrew and largely eliminated toxic strains in soil.
Doctor dramas Diagnosis: not so bad
Is aspergillus becoming trendy? TV's Dr House diagnoses a case of aspergillosis, while Doc Martin discovers aspergillus as the source of multiple cases of 'aspergillosis' in the fictional town of Portwenn in Cornwall, UK.
Veterinary
Unused drugs for veterinary use.
After extensive enquiries with the senior pharmacist at Wythenshawe Hospital and acquiring the guidence of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain we have discovered a strict embargo on supplying unused and returned drugs (in date) for use by animals or humans. We have therefore abandoned efforts to provide this service.
Case Histories
A new paediatric case entitled "A fatal case of CNS aspergillosis" can be viewed in the case histories section.
Diagnosis
Two new diagnosis articles have been added. Of these one is a new review of the diagnosis and management of paranasal sinus fungal ball.
QUOTE "functional endoscopic sinus
surgery is the gold standard for treatment of this pathology, and antifungal therapy is
unnecessary."
A renewed diagnosis section is coming shortly to take advantage of this new resource, but they can all be accessed in the current section in the meantime.
Educational
Visit our educational materials section and listen to a video interview with a long term ABPA patient.

Try it out here.
