Aspergillus species

Colony characteristics: Colonies (CzA) spreading broadly, flat, dull green to grey-green.

Microscopy: Conidial heads sparse, radiate, 500-1000 micrometre diam., pale blue-green. Vesicles spherical. Conidiophores 700-800 x 2-3 micrometre, hyaline, smooth walled. Conidiogenous cells uniseriate, 5-7.5 x 3-4 micrometre. Conidia ovoid or aculeate, echinulate, hyaline, 4.5-7.5 micrometre diam.

Teleomorph: Eurotium herbariorum (Wiggers) Link.
Ascomata covered with red hyphae, yellow, spherical to subspherical, 75-125 micrometre diam. Asci 8 spores, 10-12 micrometre diam. Ascospores smooth walled or occasionally slightly roughened, with a pronounced equatorial furrow, hyaline to subhyaline, lenticular, 6-7 x 3.2-5.1 micrometre.

Pathogenicity: Otitis (Bambule et al., 1982) and orofacial infections (Dreizen et al., 1985) have been reported, as well as cerebral, cardiovascular and visceral infections (Rippon, 1988).
