Aspergillus species

A. alliaceus Thom & Church.

Colony characteristics. Colonies (CzA) pale buff to ginger-brown, with grey to black sclerotial bodies.

Microscopy. Conidial heads radiate or columnar. Conidiaphore stipes smooth walled, up to 1.2mm long, hyaline. Vesicles spherical, occasionally somewhat elongate. Conidiogenous cells biserate on large vesicles, but on  small vesicles often uniseriate. Metulae or phialides covering at least the upper half of the vesicle. Conidia oviodal to subspherical, smooth walled, yellow, 2.5-4 x 2-3.5 micrometre. Sclerotia, when present, black with white tips, oviodal to ellipsoidal, 500-700 micrometres wide.

Pathogenicity. This species was the etiologic agent in a chronic otitis externa after surgery (Koenig et al., 1985).
