Our understanding of the human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus has recently benefitted from much work at the genomics level, including genome sequencing and comparative genome analyses. The next stage in this process is to develop a higher-level appreciation of the organism’s biology and to this end the Pathway Tools software has been used to map the metabolic pathways of A. fumigatus Af293. The resulting web-based resource shows 242 pathways which can be viewed at a variety of resolutions.

AspICU is a web-based surveillance project of Aspergillus in Intensive Care Units, currently looking for Physicians and researchers to contribute. This is an international, observational survey of ICU patients with evidence of either Aspergillus colonization or invasive aspergillosis. The AspICU study is designed to collect a large series of ICU patients with either Aspergillus colonization or invasive disease. The gathered data will be used to investigate the epidemiology of invasive aspergillosis in ICU patients, and to validate a diagnostic algorithm that discriminates colonization from invasive disease. Annotation for Aspergillus fumigatus (Af293) has finally been updated, bringing it into line with the current data publicaly available as a result of the collaborative project for this genome, A. fumigatus (A1163), A. clavatus and N. fischeri. Second-pass automated and manual annotation were carried out by an international consortium via the JCVI. Data were received directly from JCVI in XML format, however, previous annotations (such as protein family matches) are missing. We hope to merge this information from previous versions and other resources ASAP. As part of the above project, new public loci were assigned to each gene. To enable flow of information, the old identifiers are given as an alternive public loci within the gene descriptions. A list of all the genes and their descriptions can also be found here.

The patient was seriously ill with breathing difficulties and subsequently died of renal failure. Tests subsequently revealed that he had developed acute aspergillosis and Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from sputum samples. Click link to view case.

Abstracts and attendance at the 3rd Advances Against Aspergillosis conference, January 16 2008. Florida, USA
“It has come to our notice that the time required for acquiring a US immigration visa to enter the US is now in excess of 3 months, and may be as long as 4 months. If you are planning to attend the meeting, and need a visa, we will offer a rapid acceptance process of abstracts to facilitate your visa application. Please submit your abstract online as soon as you can (we will accept a single modified abstract up to the abstract deadline). Please also send an e-mail to cfeather@ucsd.edu requesting a letter of acceptance for your visa, with your name and address and title of your abstract. This will be processed rapidly.

An alternative approach for those not planning on sending an abstract, but who would like to attend (which may be less reliable in term of getting a visa) is to e-mail either Dr. Denning (ddenning@manchester.ac.uk) or Dr. Steinbach (stein022@mc.duke.edu ) requesting a letter of support. Your e-mail should contain your name, title, work address and any detail on your interest in Aspergillus or aspergillosis that can be pasted into the body of a support letter (e.g. working on Aspergillus for my PhD, treating many patients with aspergillosis, providing a clinical diagnostic service for patients infected with Aspergillusetc). As a conference we will do all that we can to facilitate your attendance.”

Aspergillus fights cancer! The approach of the Hebrew University researchers is based on the actions of actibind, a protein that is produced by the black mold Aspergillus niger. In laboratory experiments using cell cultures that originated from human colon cancer, breast cancer and melanoma, increasing the level of actibind was found to reduce the ability of these cells to form tumorogenic colonies. Further experimentation, with a variety of animal models, showed that the increased actibind inhibited the growth of colon cancer-derived tumors, metastases and blood vessel formation.

Flooding of buildings soaks many materials that are intended to stay dry. If the ambient temperature is sufficient the result is rapid mold growth. Major disasters such as the Asian Tsunami last year and the hurricane damage in New Orleans caused severe mold growth inside buildings and potential (though currently undefined) health hazards.
