March support meeting for patients & carers. This is quite short meeting this month as most of the meeting was taken up by a private focus group. For those people who have watched these presentations in the past there has been a big change forced on us. Up until now we have used the service provided by Slideshare, but they have now discontinued that service and we have had to change the way we present these meetings. The following link should work on most devices but if not try the alternative version at http://www.nacpatients.org.uk/monthly_meetings. NB you might have to click on 'play' each time a new slide is needed. For future presentations we will try to use this opportunity to improve our presentations by recording sound and slides directly from the speakers laptop. This means that slides should be better synchronised with speech and should be available to watch more quickly. Live broadcasting may have to stop to be replaced with a broadcast of a recording of the meeting hosted by myself - this gives everyone a change to see what went on and to ask me questions directly.

The European Respiratory Society have produced a new educational module on aspergillosis, particularly those forms that infect the non-immunocompromised patient who is taking steroids. Presented by Professor David Denning, the Director of the National Aspergillosis Centre in Manchester, UK, Objectives: After the completion of this module, the participant will be able to: 1- Be able to suspect and request appropriate investigations for and treat invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in non-neutropenic, atypical patients. 2- Recognise the clues to the diagnosis of pneumocystis pneumonia in AIDS and non-AIDS patients, and be able to diagnose and treat appropriately. 3- Be able to diagnose and appropriately refer patients for long term ( sometimes life-long) antifungal therapy with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. Access is free of charge and it culminates in a CME test for 1 credit.

Clinical Research Fellow Fungal Disease An enthusiastic, enquiring clinician is sought to undertake a 3 year clinical research post related to the interaction of fungus and the lung, especially Aspergillus. With several million patients with allergic aspergillosis in Europe, 100,000s with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis and millions at risk of invasive aspergillosis, this post offers a unique opportunity become one of the best physicians in this area. The precise area of research has not been decided and will depend partly on the experience and interest of any successful candidate. Currently there are 2 Clinical Research Fellows attached to the unit: Livingstone Chishimba (Severe asthma and ABPA immunology) and Iain Page (Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis after TB, Uganda linked). Major areas of interest now include the genetics of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, ABPA and other chronic lung infections (bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis etc), azole resistance and epidemiology of fungal lung infection worldwide and the direct interaction of Aspergillus with cells in the lung. Closing date 16th September 2013

UK Scholarship in Medical Mycology The Fungal Infection Trust has offered to completely subsidise the MSc fees of one strong UK applicant to the new Medical Mycology MSc to be run in Manchester over the next academic year. There are insufficient medical mycologists in the UK for the burgeoning number of patients, especially those with fungal allergy and chronic infection, on top of the many thousands who acquire life-threatening mycoses. Vastly improved non-culture diagnostics, human genetic and immunology understanding, and new antifungal agents on the horizon promise a genuine revolution in care and prospects for greatly improved outcomes over the coming decades. The course details can be found here: http://www.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/programmes/taughtmasters/medicalmycology Applications should be made through the Manchester University portal; http://www.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/howtoapply and be accompanied by apply you need to provide a plan (Personal Statement, max 750 words) how you intend to use the scholarship to improve the diagnostics and care of patients with fungal infections in the UK. A support letter from the Head of your Hospital or Clinical laboratory summarising how your new skills will be put in use is highly recommended. 'Open the Windows' Poetry & Medicine Reading Denise Bundred, Rebecca Goss & Chris Davies Rebecca Goss's newborn daughter Ella was diagnosed with a heart condition at the hospital where Denise Bundred worked. However, they only met later as poets, writing about their respective experiences as mother/patient and doctor. Join us for their reading which also features music celebrating ‘breath’ specially commissioned from Chris Davies. Rebecca Goss's second collection, Her Birth (Carcanet/Northern House) begins with Ella’s birth, her short life and her death, and ends with the joys and complexities that accompany the birth of another child. Her Birth has been shortlisted for The Forward Prize for Best Collection of Poetry 2013. Denise Bundred's poetry was highly commended in the Hippocrates Prize 2012 and 2013. Freelance musician/performer Chris Davies works mainly with visual theatre and dance, and is interested in music as a means of promoting a sense of well-being. This event is presented in partnership with The National Aspergillosis Centre, University Hospital of South Manchester, which treats patients with fungal disease, usually of the lungs. Everyone is welcome!

Adaptation to different types of environmental stress is a common part of life for today’s fungi. A deeper understanding of the organization, regulation and evolution of fungal stress response systems may lead to the development of novel antifungal drugs and technologies or the engineering of industrial strains with elevated stress tolerance. Here we present the Fungal Stress Response Database (http://internal.med.unideb.hu/fsrd) aimed to stimulate further research on stress biology of fungi. The database incorporates 1985 fungal stress response proteins with verified physiological function(s) and their orthologs identified and annotated in 28 species including human and plant pathogens, as well as important industrial fungi. The database will be extended continuously to cover other fully sequenced fungal species. Our database, as a starting point for future stress research, facilitates the analysis of literature data on stress and the identification of ortholog groups of stress response proteins in newly sequenced fungal genomes.

Research Assistant/Associate, University of Manchester In 2011 The European Union launched its action plan to fight antibiotic resistance. Through this action plan it has recently funded a 6.3 million multi-centre collaborative project whose aim is to develop novel agents to combat the emergence of antifungal drug resistance. The role of the Manchester Fungal Infection Group (MFIG) is to identify the mechanism of action of a collection of antifungal drugs and to use structure based drug design to aid in the development of novel compounds. The 3 year full-time Research Associate post described here is critical to the overall success of the project. The purpose of the role is to conduct research into the discovery of drug mechanism of action of antifungal drugs. The role will involve high throughput genetic manipulation and screening of the pathogenic filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This will require the candidate to be familiar with cultivation and transformation of yeasts and filamentous fungi as well as being able to perform DNA, RNA and protein extractions, PCR, amongst other molecular biology techniques. In addition the role will include the analysis of datasets from high throughput sequencing (RNAseq, ChIP Seq and mutant fitness profiling). Experience of handling large data sets of this type is critical. Interested candidates should apply via the University of Manchester website

Patients Support Meeting May 2013. Will take place on 17th May (this Friday) at 1.30pm. Join us at the Lung Centre in the National Aspergillosis Centre in Manchester or join us online at http://www.aspergillus.org.uk/newpatients/monthlymeetings.php NOTE Change of speaker. One of our original speakers has been forced to cancel due to ill health (A national charity that cares for carers) but we do have the first meeting with our new health psychologist (Alison Wearden) who has a lot of experience in helping people through the stresses of chronic illness. The phrase which initiated my interest in getting support on this issue was one spoken by many people I come across " My doctor thinks its all in my head" I hope we can start to address that feeling in a helpful way. http://www.psych-sci.manchester.ac.uk/staff/AlisonWearden/
